Building Community From the Ground Up
Real community development is not delivered from above — it is grown with the people who already there.
Building Community From the Ground Up
The most common mistake in community development is arriving with answers. The most valuable practice is arriving with questions.
From Khayelitsha to the international collaborations I have been part of, the work that lasted was never imposed. It was grown — slowly, with people who already knew their community far better than I did.
My role, most days, is to hold space: for a mother to name what she needs, for a young person to discover a gift, for a group to decide what they want to build together. The leader does not bring the community into being; the community already is. The leader simply helps it recognise its own strength.
That is slow work. It does not always photograph well. But it is the only work I have seen that actually flourishes.
